Grobbel’s was founded in 1883 by Emil Grobbel, a young immigrant who had
been in the country for only one year.
The original
establishment operated in a "stall" of the old Cadillac
Square Market which was located behind Soldiers Monument in
Cadillac Square. At that time, Emil was considered a
"purveyor of fine meats", and sold a variety of items
from hams to veal to beef. |
In 1925, Emil moved his
business to 1807 Adelaide with his three sons, Emil Jr.,
Cyril, and Leo. A few years later, Emil Sr.
retired.
For years, the sons continued to sell a
variety of products, including Corned Beef, until
approximately 1945, when they began to direct their
interests solely to cured meats.
During the early fifties, Cyril's son, Cyril Jr., joined the operation as a principal. It was at that time Grobbel's earned a reputation for their fine Corned Beef and so developed the pen name of "Grobbel's Corned Beef". |

By 1973, all of Emil's sons had retired,
leaving Cyril Jr., his grandson, the remaining principal.
In 1976,
Grobbel's decided to pursue the rapidly expanding deli
business, by installing their first cooker. As a
result of the growth that occurred from cooked product
sales, Grobbel's found it necessary to move to the
existing facility at 2500 Orleans in 1980. This
facility of over 25,000 total square feet provides 16,000
square feet of production and utility area, 8,300 square
feet of cooler/freezer storage area and 1,600 square feet
of offices.
By 1987, Cyril Jr. had retired, turning over the operation
to his son, 4th generation, Jason Grobbel, great grandson
of Emil. Today, Grobbel's successfully combines the
use of the latest in processing technology with experience
and old-world craftsmanship, a combination made possible
through a history of tradition.
